The underside of the hatches were sealed yesterday and although the sealer is not yet dry I took both hatches into the container and started the varnishing as the tops are ready. I checked the state of the deck paint and it was dry to the touch so I expect that I'll be able to put a second coat on this evening. The poop deck will also be covered with the deck paint and if all goes well, the cabin sides and fore hatch will receive the first coat of varnish.
