2023.04.11 - Working on More Tasks

Yet another beautiful day, cool to start, sunny but a little breezy. The forecast for the rest of the day isn't so good. As soon as breakfast was done I took the ash pan that I'd brought into the house and put on the Rayburn down to Naiad to dry fit it in the cabin. Having been on the heater for twelve hours or more, the epoxy was completely cured and the peel ply came off easily.

This is the ash pan and you can see the nice fillets in the corners.

It fit into the space so I should be able to use the heater now without getting ash in the cabin. I still have to sand the ash pan and treat it with something, not sure what at the moment, but for all intents and purposes, this is done.

So, it's probably time to review the task list.

  • Remove the trailer guides
  • Fit the eyebolt in the stem.
  • Cut the chain locker down.
  • Remove the fairleads on the bow.
  • Fit the new fairleads.
  • Drill a number of small holes in the area around the leak.
  • Flood the leaks and the holes with penetrating epoxy.
  • Fill the leak and holes with thickened epoxy.
  • Make the metal backing pads for the chainplates.
  • Remove all the loose items from the inside of the boat.
  • Invert the hull.
  • Scrape the dead growth off the bottom.
  • Make and fit the keel band to the keel and bilge keels.
  • Over the area of the transom leak with epoxy, glass mat & peel ply.
  • Remove peel ply once the epoxy has cured.
  • Fill the holes left after removing the gudgeon & pintle from the transom.
  • Sand the entire hull.
  • Copper epoxy the hull under the waterline.
  • Paint the topsides.
  • Paint the boot top.
  • Invert the hull.
  • Refit the tabernacle.
  • Fit the new chainplates.
  • Refit the chain locker.
  • Refit the sampson post.
  • Sand the brightwork.
  • Varnish the brightwork.
  • Repaint the deck and coachroof if necessary.
  • Move the boat out of the workshop back into the Hay Barn.
  • Move the spars in to the workshop.
  • Sand and varnish the spars.
  • Dress the spars.
  • Move the boat onto the hard standing.
  • Dress and fit the mast and spars.
  • Bend on the sails.
  • Lower the mast and prepare Naiad for transport

That's a lot of tasks completed. If I tidy up the list and remove the completed items, then this is what I have left:

  • Sand the brightwork.
  • Varnish the brightwork.
  • Repaint the deck and coachroof if necessary.
  • Sand and varnish the spars.
  • Dress the spars.
  • Move the boat onto the hard standing.
  • Dress and fit the mast and spars.
  • Bend on the sails.
  • Lower the mast and prepare Naiad for transport

Now I have to add another tasks to the list and that is to make something to reinforce the mast and tabernacle for the journey down to the mooring so that the jolting will not break the seal that the sealant makes between the tabernacle and the coachroof. I had this problem last year and it was a pain. The rain water got into the cabin and soaked part of my bedding.

I'm not sure how I'm going to make this reinforcement, but it will need to be done before the trip.

Time for a cup of tea.
