2021.05.17 - Putting Things Back Together

I've started the painting, just the poop deck since that can be removed and painted in the workshop. Today, once the paint had dried, I put back the fittings that had been removed for the revarnish and paint.

Now it is looking clean and new.

Only a few fittings to replace here.

But that led me on to replacing a few other fittings, such as the headsail sheet cleats.

And the compass holder.

One of the bottom boards in the cockpit cracked again. The repair work I did to prevent water getting into the cabin seemed to be the culprit.

That messy bit raises one corner of the bottom board and when you then stand on the board, the strain cracks it.

A little bit of work with a pin sander removes the excess, but I went too far and took away some of the wood. Not a lot, but it has to be dealt with.

A coating of epoxy sorts that out.

Only a little epoxy was used in the cockpit and the rest was thickened and used to fill the crack in the bottom board. I opened it up wide, as you can see here, troweled in epoxy and then closed the crack a bit to the desired "curvature" and scraped off the excess that squeezed out.

Hopefully, the "curve" will prevent it from cracking again.

I also mixed up some "Liquid Copper" and repaired the damage to the antifouling that was caused when we took Naiad out of the water. Not having a trailer guide meant that our first effort missed and the metalwork on the trailer scraped some of the antifouling off.

I had some of that left over so I applied it to the bobstay fitting, just to use it up.

I took off the solar panels and stuffed the screw holes with rolled up paper towel to prevent any water getting into the cabin.

The entire coachroof, fore and aft was then washed with fresh water. The paper towel survived the process well. Tomorrow I shall tape the coachroof and if the weather allows it will get a coat of paint.

But that's enough for today.
